Introduction: What Does “Heaven” Really Mean?
When most people hear the word heaven, they imagine a place of eternal peace, where believers go after death to dwell with God. But in Scripture, the term heaven carries more depth and dimension than a single destination. The Bible speaks of multiple “heavens”, each with its own function and meaning in God’s creation.
Understanding this concept not only deepens our theology but also strengthens our awe of God’s design. The Bible reveals a threefold structure of the heavens—a layered order that reflects both the physical and spiritual realms of existence.
1. The First Heaven — The Sky Above
The first heaven is what we can see with our eyes: the atmosphere, clouds, and sky. It’s the realm where the birds fly and the rain falls.
In Genesis 1:8, we read:
“And God called the firmament Heaven. And the evening and the morning were the second day.”
This “firmament” refers to the expanse separating the waters above from the waters below. It is what we today call the atmosphere. Psalm 19:1 further illustrates:
“The heavens declare the glory of God; the firmament shows His handiwork.”
Every sunrise, cloud formation, and storm testifies of God’s majesty in this first heaven. It is the visible canvas of creation—the physical sky that proclaims the beauty and order of God’s design.
Practical Reflection:
Every time you look up, you’re seeing the first heaven. It’s a constant reminder that creation itself worships its Creator (Romans 1:20).
2. The Second Heaven — The Celestial and Spiritual Realm
Beyond the blue sky lies a second heaven—the cosmic expanse that contains stars, planets, and galaxies. This is the astronomical realm, but biblically, it also symbolizes a spiritual battlefield.
Deuteronomy 4:19 refers to this realm:
“And beware lest you lift up your eyes to heaven, and when you see the sun and the moon and the stars... you be drawn away and worship them.”
This verse points to the second heaven as the domain of celestial bodies. However, Scripture also portrays it as the arena of spiritual warfare—the unseen dimension where angels and demonic forces operate.
Ephesians 6:12 describes it vividly:
“For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places.”
Those “high places” refer not to earthly mountaintops but to the spiritual atmosphere surrounding Earth—the realm between God’s throne and the human world.
Example:
In Daniel 10, an angel sent to Daniel was delayed by “the prince of the kingdom of Persia,” a demonic power operating in that unseen realm. Michael, one of God’s archangels, came to assist. This exchange unfolded not on Earth, but in the second heaven, emphasizing the cosmic struggle between light and darkness.
3. The Third Heaven — The Dwelling Place of God
The third heaven is the highest realm, the eternal home of God, and the ultimate destination of believers.
Paul gives us a glimpse in 2 Corinthians 12:2–4:
“I know a man in Christ who fourteen years ago was caught up to the third heaven... and heard inexpressible words, which it is not lawful for a man to utter.”
Paul was referring to his own experience of being caught up into Paradise, the dwelling place of the Almighty. This third heaven is not merely “above” but exists beyond time and physical space—a spiritual dimension of perfect holiness, light, and presence.
Here, God reigns. Angels worship. The saints rest.
Revelation 4:1–2 paints the scene:
“After this I looked, and behold, a door standing open in heaven! And the first voice... said, ‘Come up here, and I will show you what must take place after this.’”
This is where the throne of God stands, surrounded by angels crying, “Holy, holy, holy!” (Isaiah 6:3).
Practical Reflection:
For believers, the third heaven is our eternal hope. Jesus said, “I go to prepare a place for you” (John 14:2). That “place” is not symbolic—it is the actual dwelling of the redeemed, a realm untouched by sin or decay.

Connecting the Three Heavens
These three heavens are not isolated layers but interconnected realities—each serving a purpose in God’s grand design:
The First Heaven reveals His creation and power.

Psalm 115:16 ties them together:
